Mariah

Mariah Carey, the biggest-selling female artist of the 1990's, has a brand-new album, Butterfly, and the release is bound to delight and surprise Mariah's worldwide legions of fans, who've bought more than 80 million of her records since her debut in 1990.

Mariah's last album, Daydream, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart; generated three consecutive #1 singles -- "Fantasy," "One Sweet Day" (her duet with Boyz II Men), and "Always Be My Baby" -- and has been certified nine times platinum by the RIAA.

With the success of Daydream, Mariah Carey became the first female artist in history to have three studio albums to each sell in excess of eight million copies. Butterfly takes Mariah soaring to a new level of musical vision and artistry and promises to exceed the achievements of its predecessors.

"Honey," the first single from Butterfly, is an instant hit on multi-format radio while a groundbreaking video for the track -- codirected by Mariah Carey and Daniel Pearl and shot by Paul Hunter -- rocketed into across-the-board heavy rotation on MTV, VH1, BET, and the Box. In the history-making tradition of its forerunners, "Honey" debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of its release. According to the Billboard Bulletin (September 4, 1997), "Honey" is "... her third single to open in the top spot and her 12th No. 1 overall, giving her the most chart-toppers of any solo female artist in the rock era. In the history of the Hot 100, only six singles have debuted at No. 1 and Carey owns half of them."

Butterfly includes 11 new compositions written by Mariah with some of pop music's most illustrious collaborators:

  • "Honey" (produced by Sean "Puffy" Combs for Bad Boy Entertainment, Inc., The Ummah, Stevie J., and Mariah Carey);
  • "Butterfly" (produced and arranged by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff);
  • "My All" (produced and arranged by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff);
  • "The Roof" (produced by Poke and Tone for Track Masters Entertainment, and Mariah Carey);
  • "Fourth of July" (produced and arranged by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff);
  • "Breakdown" (produced by Mariah Carey, Stevie J., and Sean "Puffy" Combs for Bad Boy Entertainment, Inc.);
  • "Babydoll" (produced by Mariah Carey and Cory Rooney);

  • "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)" (co-produced by Mariah Carey and David Morales for Def Mix Productions);
  • "Outside" (produced and arranged by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff; co-produced by Cory Rooney)
In addition, Mariah carries on her tradition of performing heart-stopping cover versions with her rendition of (The Artist Formerly Known As) Prince's "The Beautiful Ones" (from Purple Rain); the track is produced by Mariah Carey and Cory Rooney.

Guest artists on Butterfly include Mase & The Lox (on "Honey") and Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone from Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony (on "Breakdown").

Mariah Carey released her eponymous debut album in 1990. Mariah Carey has sold more than 12 million albums worldwide and yielded a record-setting four consecutive #1 singles on Billboard's Top Pop Singles chart: "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday," and "I Don't Wanna
                                                              Cry."

On March 17, 1992, Mariah Carey performed on MTV Unplugged. That appearance led to an EP which sold more than five million copies worldwide, a #1 single ("I'll Be There") and a home video which has sold more than a quarter-of-a-million copies worldwide.

In 1993, Mariah Carey released Music Box, which has sold more than 24 million copies worldwide and generated the #1 singles "Dreamlover" and "Hero" as well as the Top 10 hit "Without You."
